Once the Pantone 2018 color of the year was announced as Ultra Violet well I knew this year would be bold in the design world. When I think about how we here in the states view design trends it’s ever moving like a bullet train. Some of which I have gladly missed and chose to board the next one. Bold is where it is at this year as we are seeing graphic prints on wall paper, rugs and the forever favorite of the dark accent wall.
Black and white is by far one of my favorite color contrast trends and I feel personally it always works. I find it refreshing yet timeless like that little black cocktail dress you have that works for various events and looks fabulous anytime.
Although bold contrast is not for the faint hearted it sure packs a solid punch when styled in a home. One of the favorite go to treatment is to mix other elements in to almost create a balance so to speak. It works especially when paired with rustic touches of reclaimed wood or the other extreme of adding gold or chrome metal to give it that glamour factor. Regardless of the appeal it has not yet caught on in Europe as of yet. The design elements are still what we where clamoring over a few years ago with florals and warm tones. It’s fascinating to me to see what are the top trends and realize that we dabbled and mastered those looks throughout our homes quite easily. Still the beauty I feel transcends and once caught up we will be on to the next so called hot ticket to paradise in the world of home decor.
Kitchens right now get such a craze here in the US as we are seeing lone gone the days of wood cabinets and tile floors to welcoming live edge open shelves and dark colors. White subway tiles, hanging pendants and a great use of that open floor plan along with more dark and light contrast have everyone wanting their kitchens to have that modern flair.
I love to watch everything evolve in its own time whether it’s here or the love of design with my European cultured friend. It’s truly makes for some great table talk paired with the ideas of those of us still pushing the boundaries of design here with an anything goes attitude. I am ready to see what the Summer will hold for us. Here’s to wait awaits with paint, wallpaper and furnishings. Eyes wide open and my creative wheels are spinning in anticipation.
